マヤの予言 2012年に地球は滅亡する
2012年に地球は滅亡する。とする予言があります。マヤ文明を築いたマヤ人が持つマヤの暦に使われた単位に「バクトゥン」があります。これは１バクトゥンを14万4000日としていて、それに従うと世界は西暦2012年12月21日の金曜日に滅びるとされています。
具体的にどのようにして地球は滅亡するのでしょう。第一に考えられているのが極移動です。これはポールシフト（pole shift）とも呼ばれていて、何らかの原因で惑星など天体の自転に伴う極が現在の位置から移動することです。実際に地球の地磁気は過去100万年あたり1.5回程度で反転していることが地質的に明らかになっています。ポールシフトが起こると大洪水が発生し地上の動植物が大量死します。そして世界は滅亡するのです。しかし、自然科学の世界では大規模なポールシフトが頻発していたという考えは認められておらず、オカルト的な妄言として扱われているのが現状です。
太陽の大規模なフレアが発生する
太陽の活動周期は約11年です。太陽活動周期は太陽の表面に見られる黒点の数を観測することで分かります。黒点の数が増えるに従い活動は活性化し、反対に黒点の数が減少するにつれて太陽活動は弱まることが分かっています。
前回の太陽のサイクル（第23期太陽活動周期）は1996年から始まり2001年頃が極大期と呼ばれる太陽活動の最も盛んな時期でした。そして、次の極大期は2012年頃(2010〜2012）と言われています。
米国宇宙局（NASA）による報告書では、この時に太陽フレアが放出するエネルギーが地球の磁気シールドに「大きな穴」を開けるとしています。
「磁気シールドの穴」とは、NASAの磁気圏観測衛星『THEMIS』(Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms)の観測データから判明したもの。太陽からの磁場線の向きは、11年周期の太陽活動に合わせて変化するが、太陽からの磁場線が地球の磁場線と同じ方向を向く場合、太陽粒子の層が厚くなり、地球の磁気シールドを通過する粒子の量が20倍以上になるとされる。
太陽フレアの放出するエネルギーは、地球磁場を混乱させ強力な電流によって高圧変圧器の故障や電流網の停止する可能性が指摘されています。実際に1989年の極大期には、激しい磁気嵐がカナダのケベック州の電力システムを破壊しました。次の極大期には太陽に蓄積されたエネルギーが解放されるとされており、太陽嵐が発生する可能性が挙げられています。それの影響は計り知れないものがあるでしょう。
原子力発電所への影響
超高圧変圧器は、電力需要が大きくなるほど不安定になります。変圧器が故障した場合、修理が難しく新しい変圧器に取り替えるのに時間を要すると指摘されています。1989年にカナダのケベック州で停電を起こした太陽嵐より10倍強力だったと見られる1921年と同じ程度の太陽嵐が、次の極大期に発生すると変圧器の故障が生じ大規模な停電が発生するでしょう。すると、原子力発電所も停電し炉心を冷却できずにメルトダウンを起こしてしまいます。
炉心溶解
稼動している原子力発電所では、基本的に炉心内における核反応が臨界に達し発熱しているが、これは設計上想定されている範囲であれば問題はない。しかし事故などによって冷却材を喪失し制御を誤るなどすると、炉内の核反応は暴走し、この反応に伴って発生する非常な高熱によって、炉内の温度が急激に上昇して燃料集合体を融かし破壊する。これが発生すると放射性物質が外部に漏れることが多い。世界中の重大な原発事故を見ると、例外なく炉心溶融が発生している。過去には故意に炉心溶融を起こして挙動を観測する原子炉暴走実験も行われていた。

平成21年４月時点における日本の原子力発電所の保有数は61基であり世界でもベスト3に入ります。狭い国土にこれだけの原子力発電所が存在しているのは脅威でしょう。万が一、太陽嵐の影響を受けてメルトダウンが起こり水蒸気爆発に発展した場合、何ら手を打つことができません。アメリカの原子力発電所の数は100基以上、日本以上に危険を背負っていることがわかります。隣国の中国も原子力発電所の増設計画を発表しました。
